“With all of our running and all of our cunning, if we couldn’t laugh we’d all go insane.” – Jimmy Buffet
Loud and clear, Mr. Buffet. Currently I vacillate between experiencing fits of blissful laughter and feeling certifiably crazy (not totally uncommon for me but definitely heightened) from under a sea of jam-packed boxes, toys littering the house that have been unpacked from said boxes, bills, laundry and donations galore. In a few short days, Storey, Rue, Maude the cat, and I are embarking on the adventure of a lifetime! We are moving over 1,000 miles north from Houston, Texas to Denver, Colorado. Solo.
My mom recently told me that moving is as stressful as death and divorce. Well, I’ve been thru both and survived so I’m thinking this won’t be all that bad……..ish?!
After 10 years in Houston, with a break for a failed marriage in Austin, I will secure everyone into their car seats (or animal carrier) and drive for 15 hours thru the night in search of a richer life. We are going because I want my children to grow in a place where they can see mountains on the horizons, and realize how big the world is and how small they are. To breath into their lungs crisp clean air as opposed to the car exhaust off of 45N. We are leaving this concrete jungle behind in search of state healthcare that recognizes Storey’s 40 hours a week of applied behavior analysis therapy is crucial and covers it. We will say goodbye to these highways and byways so Rue can stretch her long legs on hikes in nature and run freely with grass between her toes.
Time to enjoy seasons, 300 days of sunshine, sledding, the great outdoors, Red Rocks and hopefully a support system that will be mutually awesome.
As Jimmy sings “I can’t look back for long, there’s just too much to see waiting in front of me”.
We have too much to see and do, play, feel, taste, experience, and contribute. We will, hopefully, be met by the winds and sunsets of Colorado with open arms and I will continue to teach by example that it’s the thought that counts and love prevails.
I choose to take this giant leap of faith knowing that the future holds beautiful mystery and like the first snow fall Storey, Rue and Maude the cat will ever experience, a fresh start for our perfect quirky little family. Hold on tight. It’s going to be one hell of a ride that even Buffet hasn’t sung about. Yet.
